The Segreants Trust, which provides financial support to Downing College Boat Club, “DCBC”, is able to offer Rowing Awards to support students with rowing experience during their time at Downing. The awards will be made on the basis of merit each year during undergraduate or postgraduate studies. Typically, they will comprise a cash payment of £1,000 per year towards your living costs or student fees while studying at Downing, payable at the beginning of the academic year.
You will typically have rowed competitively in a town club boat, at school, or at University for at least two years. You will have already secured a place on your chosen course of study. Applicants can be UK or foreign nationals, undergraduate or postgraduate.
Duration of award
Rowing Awards run for each year of your academic programme (excluding any year spent abroad or otherwise away from Cambridge). The awards are made after you have matriculated at Downing, early in your first term.
Number of awards available
Usually around 4 per academic year. We would particularly encourage applicants from state schools or non-traditional rowing backgrounds to apply, although all applications are welcome.
The awards will be payable based upon your continued participation in rowing.
You will be expected to row for DCBC in each year that you receive the award. Should you be selected to row for one of the University Boat Club crews in their annual races against Oxford, we recognise that it will not be practical for you to row for Downing in the first two terms of the academic year. However, you would be expected to row for Downing during the May (Summer) term.
You will be encouraged to help out with coaching some of the lower boats and novice rowers. You will have an ambassadorial role for rowing within the College and to support DCBC in its social activities. You will be required to submit a short report at the end of each year on how and what you have contributed to DCBC (250 words max).
The renewal of the award will be annual and will be based on your continued and positive participation in the Boat Club as described above.
